“My head’s a mess! I don’t know where to go from here. I’m so confused!”
These are familiar scenarios in my sessions with new clients – all ages, walks of life, various limiting beliefs and even sky high with confidence …
We all know that ‘heart v head’ scenario; we’ve all had it going on at some point in our lives …
“I don’t know what to do?!”
There’s two voices going on inside of you simultaneously. One that says it’s excited, eager, willing and able … then there’s the other, often louder saying “Umm, not sure … what if I fail … don’t think I’m good enough …“
All those ‘ho hums’ of indecision, fear and inadequacy steam through our heads like a freight train. Our subconscious mind is running a programme that we don’t even know exists.
Our heart tends to know what’s right for us. The energy of the heart is that which gets you excited, enthused and inspired. The heart also has an electromagnetic energy field greater than our brainwave activity. It can reach out several feet, process information and communicate with others without us even realising. It’s like a super charged antennae within and around us!

“The Heart has a knowledge which the mind is not acquainted.”
Descartes – French Philosopher
It’s the heart that can give us an energetic response to our actions and act as a very effective barometer.
If we rely solely on the activity of our minds and our thinking, then it’s easy to go down a track which isn’t necessarily the right track for us at any given time.
This is where much of the confusion and fear in us arises because we don’t trust our radar. How can we, we’re here in this mess?
So why do our heads get us in such turmoil?
Well, a thought can create a feeling and that feeling can then create an action, or inaction as the case may be.
We listen to those thoughts rolling around our heads, believing every one of them to be true because it came from our own mind. We don’t see that there are actually different sources of thought and therefore feeling.
We have over 50,000 uncontrolled thoughts every day, most of which pop in for a chat without invitation. We can however ‘un-invite’ those thoughts and send them packing without getting into needless conversation with them. They arrived but they don’t have to stay, not unless we ask them to.
The unconscious thoughts we have no control over, the ones like above who pop in without invitation. They’ve been hanging around the party of our niaive and subconscious mind who is more than happy to be bullied into doing whatever it’s being told to do. They hang around there because no one told them to leave so they become part of the hard drive and making themselves quite at home.
The conscious thoughts are from our conscious mind, it’s more aware of what’s going on around us on a day to day basis. It’s the bit that we have some control over – for example – ‘how annoying is that person sitting next to me; how beautiful those flowers are; the smile you offer in the checkout queue…’ You make a conscious decision to think those thoughts.
Our conscious thinking tends to be more pro-active which means it can actively seek out and acknowledge new things constantly. So it can consciously seek out the good things too.
These conscious thoughts however, like to party with the unconscious thoughts; before you know it, all hell breaks loose. The conscious thoughts like to have a party and to get caught up in the chaos of everyday life – thrill seekers if you like! They don’t however really care with whom ‘they get it on’!
If a miserable and negative unconscious thought or two drop in for the party, they don’t tell them to ‘bugger off’ cos this is a happy house only, they go YEEAAH come on in … stay as long as you like, so they do and they bring their friends. Before you know it the happy house has been hijacked and the party feels more like a funeral. The idea is to tell the negative, unconscious party dwellers that they are not welcome – seriously.
Allowing your headspace to become a party for the down and outs is no way to housekeep your internal affairs. A simple ‘no thanks, not entertaining you today’ said regularly enough can make a significant difference to your headspace. Those unwanted party dwellers no longer get a free ride in your head.
What if they won’t go? Then make sure you up your numbers of happy conscious party dwellers who like the happy razzamatazz of the pretty flowers, bright lights and the big smiles, seek them out, look for them … Fill your party with happy, positive, conscious thoughts instead.
The unconscious, negative gate crashers will start to realise that they’ll only get access to the party if they’re walking on the sunnier side of the street! Teach them a new way of being, let them see the light of fun, happiness and gratitude. It may be that they turn from being black and white to shades of grey but those shades will slowly begin to take on the gentle hues of colour, bit by bit, little by little and piece by piece.
If everyone is content to sit in the doom and gloom of the party poopers then that mood’s going to spread like wild fire.
So imagine your head’s the party, start to fill it with all the happy poppets (conscious thoughts) who can see the rainbows in your every day, take the smiles from the passers by. Hijack those good thoughts & feelings and get them to the party. If there’s only a limited supply, then make your head a learning ground for all the miserable party poopers (negative thoughts) and ‘train’ them until they slowly fade away.
As ‘they’ say …
‘WHEN IT RAINS LOOK FOR RAINBOWS, WHEN IT’S DARK, LOOK FOR STARS.’
If you don’t feel able to take control of the ‘party’ and there aren’t any stars in your night sky then hypnotherapy, coaching and energy work can start the reprogramming of that negative self talk.
They are a great way to take those most important first steps to get you out of that rut and moving forward, head and heart holding hands together.
