The Hummingbird

If you’re wondering where the hummingbird theme comes into this site and my work then I’ll share with you my story …

Many years ago when my spiritual journey was beginning to unfold a little more intensely, the hummingbird (although not literally because sadly they don’t live here!) began to present iself to me regularly.

It appeared in dreams, on my birthday cards, christmas gifts; it appeared on clothing labels, the TV when I turned it on … even clients healing sessions (!) … EVERYWHERE to the point were I couldn’t ignore the presence of its energy any longer, even if I’d tried.

Over the course of a year this little bird was showing up in my life in one way or another almost daily. So much so I even got it tattooed on my ankle and have used it as my logo for the last few years.

It has remained ever faithful for over a decade and has a familiarity within my soul I would find hard to describe. I know now that it’s my Spirit animal or Totem as they’re known in native american culture and shamanic practice.

The hummingbird appeared to me at a time when my vibrational energy was beginning to shift up a notch, when I was becoming more aware of Spirit. My healing training was beginning and the energy of that little bird was something to which I felt I could connect.

At times it brings its messages into my dreams and shows its presence a little more obviously when I know it has something to say – it’s never the same message but usually I understand what it’s trying to convey.

The symobolic nature of the hummingbird is many fold and I try not to concern myself too much with this. It shows itself in shamanism and legend but I allow my own sense of its energy to be all the knowing that I need. I am however going to share some words that have come to me either inadvertently over the years or by lovely people who know my connection ….

“Legends say that hummingbirds float free of time, carrying our hopes for love, joy and celebration. The hummingbirds delicate grace reminds us that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning and that laughter is lifes sweetest creation.”

… thats beautiful isn’t it?

“The hummingbird spirit animal symbolizes the enjoyment of life and lightness of being. Those who have the hummingbird as a totem are invited to enjoy the sweetness of life, lift up negativity wherever it creeps in and express love more fully in their daily endeavors … those who have this bird as totem may be encouraged to develop their adaptability and resiliency while keeping a playful and optimistic outlook.”

There is much more written about this tiny ball of energy and what it represents but I think its symbolism is rather self explanatory. I can certainly relate to much of what is written especially regarding its management of energy! If you have a totem animal then the above site is a good source of information.

When I was going through the technicalities of creating this blog site, I’d already registered it as ‘Stephanie Powell Wellbeing’ … yup, very boring … I know! I couldn’t think of anything else that would represent my intentions for this site as a platform of writing and sharing; really that’s the sum total of it – nothing fluffy … or exciting for that matter!!

Then in a quick moment of quiet ‘The Hummingbird Diaries’ popped in. I nearly said ‘NO’ to my ‘knowing‘ and to my little totem … “How is ‘The Hummingbird Diaries’ going to tell people what this blog is all about?”

I’m still shrugging my shoulders, yet what I do know is that the name feels right; it gives me a shiver when  I think about it and it feels truer to who I am. Therefore I know that it will help me to create a clearer and more authentic reflection of who I am and create in a way that’s honest to myself and my work.

With love & thanks to my little hummingbird for always showing me the way … ♥
